TexasBank and the Opportunity Center for the Homeless jointly celebrated a groundbreaking ceremony for Casa de los Abuelitos on Wednesday, May 22 in El Paso.
El Paso, TX – TexasBank and the Opportunity Center for the Homeless jointly celebrated a groundbreaking ceremony for Casa de los Abuelitos on Wednesday, May 22 in El Paso. This facility, located at 150 Brown Street, will serve El Paso’s elderly homeless male population and complement the
Opportunity Center’s existing facilities which currently serve hundreds of El Paso’s homeless population with an open-door policy.

TexasBank sponsored a grant with the Federal Home Loan Bank for over $600,000 to help finance the construction of this 35-unit facility that will have over 24 units of Single Room Occupancy housing plus an
11-unit Transitional Living Center, both of which will be targeting frail and elderly homeless men. The people participating in this program have special needs like mental and physical frailty, victims of violence, family abandonment, no family or support system, and substance use concerns.
Ann Herkenhoff, TexasBank’s El Paso Market President, has served on the nonprofit board for over 20 years. Herkenhoff stated, “the fight to eliminate homelessness in El Paso is what I believe to be my life’s true calling. I am proud to work for a bank that is as committed as I am to this cause and making all our communities better places to live, work, and serve.”
Attendance at the ceremony included Mark Riebe, Chairman, Greg Dodds, President and CEO, David Knight, Director, Jason Brown, Director as well as many board members and staff with the Opportunity Center. John Martin, Deputy Director of the Center stated, “We are incredibly grateful for the support of TexasBank in supporting the application to the Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas. This will allow us to move forward with the construction of La Casa de los Abuelitos, a program to provide shelter and permanent housing for our senior, homeless men under our care. We at the Opportunity Center for the Homeless recognize that to care for our most vulnerable – we do so in partnership with the community with great folks such as TexasBank.
